Journalism has over the years ensured that news and information is available to the society. Curious, fearless, and honest journalists are therefore very essential to the society be it a democratic one or otherwise. Robert Fisk is a journalist who is known to have such qualities and whose work, I have come to appreciate. He is an award winning British journalist as well as writer.

Robert Fisk in the Middle East

He is based in Beirut and had been working for The Independent since 1989. It is his interest in Political Science that made him move to the Middle East and tell its stories from within. One of the most unique things about Robert Fisk is that he is one of the very few Western Journalists who interviewed Osama bin Laden. This paper gives a detailed compelling profile of this fearless journalist.

Robert Fisk, after working in the Middle East for over 40 years, had covered numerous stories about the regions as well as its relations with the Western World. One of the most outstanding stories is titled “Iran’s Nuclear Program” that was published on December 2^nd, 2008. He explains the why Iran needs nuclear facilities. Being the ‘policeman’ of the Gulf region back in the 1950s, Iranians found it necessary to establish a nuclear program.

This would earn them the respect of its peers that is the United States and the United Soviets Socialist Republic were getting. Their efforts to develop these nuclear capabilities were halted in the 1970s but later revived in the 1980s after they were invaded by Saddam Hussein. At the end, Robert points out that despite the fact that the Western World does not like the Iranians’ new nuclear capabilities, they will not attack Iran.

Robert Fisk on Trump

Recently, Robert Fisk wrote another interesting story entitled “Trump’s Mad Dash to the Middle East Is a Preview of the Chaos He Is Unleashing There” that was published on May 16, 2017. In this article he focuses on Donald Trump’s relations with the Middle East. He points out that the United States needs the help of Israel in order to defeat Isis. The twist here is the fact that Israel has never bombed Isis in Syria, a fact that Trump is likely to miss. Fisk thinks that this means that Trump knows too little about the Arab World to meddle in its affairs. He adds that Trumps relations with Benjamin Netanyahu barely worthwhile since he hardly represents the Jews.

Fisk being a Western journalist based in the Middle East makes him very credible. He gives an outsider’s insight about the Arab World as well as critically analyzes the Western world’s influence in the region. His physical presence in the region for over 40 years shows how much he cares about it.

He lays out facts that other journalists especially ones based outside the region are likely to miss. In my opinion, Fisk’s work on the Middle East is incredible. He however, should refrain from referring to Trump as a mad man. This level of disrespect to the leader of the free world is not good for the democracy that has been realized though out the world.

My Analysis on Robert Fisk

My analysis into Robert Fisk’s work has made me change my perspective about the profession completely. I have realized that telling a credible story requires a lot of sacrifice on the side of the journalist. As a journalist, I should be willing to live in foreign and at times hardship conditions in pursuit of keeping the world informed.
